Offer Prayer Till Death

Allah the Almighty says in the Qur’an:

And He has made me blessed wherever I am, and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive.”
(Maryam 19:31)

This verse is a powerful reminder about the central role that Salah (prayer) must play in our lives. It speaks not only to our attitude toward prayer, but also to how we prioritize it, how we perceive it, and how we implement it consistently throughout our lifetime.

The verse tells us clearly: “…as long as I remain alive.”
In other words, Salah is not optional, seasonal, or circumstantial. It is a lifelong commitment—one we must hold onto until our very last breath.

A Lifelong Commitment

This teaching is not theoretical. It is not just a slogan or a lofty ideal. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived it and embodied it in every phase of his life—even in his final days.

About a week before the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, he became seriously ill. His condition worsened to the point that he could no longer stand or walk unaided. Despite this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) never abandoned the prayer.

He would call upon two of his Companions to come to his home and physically assist him. With their help, he would go to the mosque or perform prayer in his room, showing that even in his weakest state, Salah remained his priority.

What Does This Mean for Us?

This example teaches us that no matter what happens in life—health challenges, personal struggles, distractions, or responsibilities—Salah must remain at the core of who we are. It is our link to Allah, our spiritual anchor, and our source of peace, direction, and discipline.

Salah is not something we do when it’s convenient. It is something we hold on to until our final moments.

You can watch an inspiring talk on this topic by Sheikh Abdul Nasir Jangda, where he beautifully discusses the importance and excellence of prayer, especially as demonstrated by the Prophet (peace be upon him) during his final days.
