Standing Foot next to Foot in Prayer: Mandatory?

How to arrange the rows in Prayer?

Question:

Is it mandatory to stand foot next to foot in prayer or only shoulder by shoulder?

Answer:

Muslims are commanded to straighten their lines while offering the congregational prayer and close the gaps between them. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Perform the bowing and the prostrations properly. By Allah, I see you from behind me (or from behind my back) when you bow or prostrate.” (Al-Bukhari)

Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Arrange the rows in order, stand shoulder to shoulder, close the gaps, be accommodating to your brothers, and do not leave gaps for Satan. Whoever joins up a row, he will be joined to Allah (i.e., to the Mercy of Allah); and whoever cuts off a row, he will be cut off from Allah (i.e., from His Mercy).” (Abu Dawud)

The previous hadiths imply the obligation to straighten the rows behind the Imam of prayer and stand close together in them. Standing close in rows, filling the gaps and straightening the line have a great reward and virtue as well. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (The Messenger of Allah directed us thus): Establish rows in prayer, for the making of a row (straight) is one of the merits of prayer.” (Muslim)

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah explains the view of scholars in ordering the rows in prayer and how to abide by the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) while standing in lines during prayer.
