Attaining Khushu During Prayer, How?
Question:
How could one attain khushu (humility or humbleness) from the beginning of prayer to the end?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
Almighty Allah says:
“Certainly will the believers have succeeded. They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.” (Al-Mu’minum 23:1-2)
Khushu refers to the submissiveness, gentleness, humility, yearning, and quietude (out of love as well as fear) within the heart due to the consciousness of Allah’s Greatness and Grandeur.
Our inability to concentrate during prayer is a deficiency on our part and it affects the quality of our prayers. As Muslims, we get over any problem by first seeking the help of Allah Almighty and this is the first thing you should do when you lack concentration in prayer. `Uthman ibn Abu Al-`As reported that he came to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and said: Allah’s Messenger, the Satan intervenes between me and my prayer and my reciting of the Qur’an and he confounds me. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:, That is (the doing of a) Satan (devil) who is known as Khinzab, and when you perceive its effect, seek refuge with Allah from it and spit three times to your left. I did that and Allah dispelled that from me.” (Muslim)
