Prayer: The Way to Forgiveness

Originally posted 2024-03-16 10:58:10.

A person is prostrating during his Prayer.

It is amazing how many opportunities of forgiveness are available to you on daily bases through Prayers.

The Many Paths to Forgiveness

It is striking how many and varied the ways to attain forgiveness are—diverse in their forms and accessible at different times. In other words, if you truly seek to live a spiritually clean life—if you want the stains of sin erased swiftly from your record—the path is clear and the means are plentiful.

However, before delving deeper into these avenues of divine forgiveness, one crucial point must be made: although the road to Allah’s forgiveness is paved and access is made easy, many people fail to take advantage of it. This is a sign of ghaflah (heedlessness)—a spiritual ailment that turns a human being into a machine focused only on worldly pleasures, blind to the eternal life that truly matters.

So no matter how accessible the mercy of forgiveness may be, unless you take it seriously—unless you understand the weight of sin and strive earnestly to remove it—you are likely to miss out on these countless opportunities. If that is the case, it’s a sign to reflect, because you may not yet be spiritually prepared to receive pardon.

Prayers: Daily Packages of Forgiveness

It’s truly amazing how many chances for forgiveness are presented daily through prayer. At every step of the process—from wudu (ablution), to walking to the mosque, to the prayer itself, and concluding with post-prayer adhkar (remembrance of Allah)—there lies an opportunity to be cleansed of sins.

Wudu’: Washing Both Body and Soul

`Abdullah As-Sunabihi reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“When a believing servant performs wudu and rinses his mouth, the sins come out from his mouth. When he inhales water into his nose and blows it out, the sins come out from his nose. When he washes his face, the sins exit from his face—even from beneath his eyelashes. When he washes his hands, the sins come out from under his fingernails. When he wipes his head, the sins leave his head—even from his ears. When he washes his feet, the sins come out from beneath his toenails. Then, as he walks to the mosque and performs salah, further rewards await him.”
(An-Nasa’i)

Walking to the Mosque: Steps Toward Mercy

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“When one of you performs ablution and does it well, then walks to the mosque for no reason other than prayer, not a single step is taken without Allah raising him one degree and removing a sin—until he enters the mosque. Once inside, he is considered in a state of prayer as long as he is waiting for it.”
(Ibn Majah)

The Prayer Itself: Guaranteed Cleansing

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“What do you think? If one of you had a river by his door and bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain on him?”
They replied, “No trace of dirt would remain.”
The Prophet said, “That is the example of the five daily prayers. Through them, Allah erases sins.”
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

After-Prayer Remembrance: Limitless Chances

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever recites after every prayer: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times, and completes the hundred with:
La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir
(There is no god but Allah, alone without partner. His is the dominion, His is the praise, and He has power over all things),
—his sins will be forgiven, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.”
(Muslim)

An Open Door to Forgiveness

To truly unlock the power of prayer, it must be performed with excellence—mindfully and sincerely.

Zaid ibn Khalid Al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever performs ablution properly and then prays two rak‘ahs without letting his mind wander during them will have all his past sins forgiven.”
(Abu Dawud)

Conclusion: Maximize the Impact

To reap the rewards mentioned above, we must focus on the quality of our prayers—before, during, and after. Just as a powerful detergent is needed to remove stubborn stains, our prayer must be performed with deep concentration, humility, and sincerity. By paying true attention to these aspects, we can, God willing, maintain a state of spiritual purity throughout our lives
