Ruling of Missed Prayers Due to Unconsciousness

Question:

Somebody is hospitalized while he was in a coma for a few days then he recovered. Does he have to make up the missed prayers which he missed during the time when he was unconscious?

Answer:

Dr. Muhammad Salah states that there is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding making up the missed prayers of one who is unconscious. Some of the scholars are of the view that a person who is in a coma is exempted or excused from making up any missed prayers whether they are few prayers, many days or years. It is the same ruling of women during their menses as they have to make up the fasting but not the missed prayers. This opinion is adopted by Malik, Shafi`i, Dhahri school of thought, Al-Hassan, Ibn Sirin, and others. `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The pen has been lifted from three: From the sleeper until he wakes up, from the minor until he grows up, and from the insane until he comes back to his senses or recovers.” (An-Nasa’i)

Imam Abu Hanifah and his school of thought are of the view that if a person was unconscious for more than a whole day (five prayers), then he does not have to make them up. If they are five prayers or less, then he has to make them up.
