In Congregational Prayer, Should I Recite Or Stay Silent?

Reciting Surat Al-Fatihah in Prayer behind an Imam

Apart from the usual recitations according to the majority of scholars you have to recite Surat Al-Fatihah (the Opening Chapter of the Qur’an) and a short surah. The only school of thought that differs is the Hanafi. The Hanafi school believes the Imam is doing it for you and that is enough.

On further introspection of our sunnah we find an authentic hadith that says “there is no prayer for the one who has not recited the opening of the book – meaning Surat Al-Fatihah”. (An-Nasa’i)

One may wonder, what about the loud prayers, where you hear what the Imam is reciting?

According to Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) if you hear the recitation of Surat Al-Fatihah you just have to follow it and there is no need to recite it.

Watch this important talk with Sheikh Abu Eesa to know more about the ruling of reciting Surat Al-Fatihah during prayer.
